ABOUT CAPE SOCIETY

CAPE Society is a is charitable, non-for-profit organization located in Glace Bay, Cape Breton. We are member agency of Directions Nova Scotia, that is run by a volunteer board of directors and managed through a professional team of dedicated employees. Our mission is to support persons with disabilities with community inclusion, and allow the individuals we serve to live as independently as possible.
WHAT WE DO

CAPE Society offers a structured day program for adults with intellectual disabilities that includes skill development, job readiness, community employment and inclusion, and self-advocacy. The programs and services we offer include our Personal Development Services, Pre-Vocational Program, Vocational program, Pre-Employment Program, Community Employment Program and School-to-Work Transitioning.

We also believe strongly in educating the community about the importance of building an inclusive society. We do this by creating awareness about the benefits of striving to help disabled individuals live to their fullest potential as contributing members of their community.
OUR HISTORY
In 1980, the Society opened its doors as Brass Tack Industries. The focus of the work at that time was furniture refinishing and the participants of Brass Tack gained a solid reputation for some of the best refinishing work on the island.

A tragic fire in 2005 devastated our cente. Through the efforts of the Board of Directors, staff, and the community, the construction of a new facility was completed in 2008. The new building provided more opportunities and inspired the need for a new name. The Centre for Adults in Progressive Employment (CAPE Society) was chosen to reflect a change in the organization from a furniture refinishing operation to an adult service centre that now includes programming and support that also aids in the social development of our participants
